Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle needs to build on his goal at Old Trafford or run the risk of being offloaded in January.

Dwight Gayle opened his account in the Premier League this season by scoring Newcastle United’s only goal in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat away to Manchester United.

It wasn’t the result that Newcastle wanted after going ahead on 17 minutes but Gayle’s goal was a big positive and the Magpies can benefit a great deal if he puts together something of a purple patch.

If he can’t then, well, perhaps offloading him in January wouldn’t be unthinkable.

United have a very decent run of games on the horizon – Watford, West Brom, Leicester City, Chelsea and Everton – but if the former Crystal Palace man starts most of them and fails to make a big impression in the form of goals then Rafael Benitez should consider selling up.

With 23 Championship goals last season, Gayle is a very attractive proposition for many clubs in the second tier and, with three and a half years left on his contract, Newcastle have a position of power in regards to demanding a decent sum.

Strikers are always judged on their goals and unless Gayle – who has netted once in 10 Premier League games this season – proves that he can build on his one at Old Trafford then you really do wonder whether the Spanish manager should cut him loose and look elsewhere.
