Does Dorus de Vries have a future at Celtic, after Brendan Rodgers’s latest comments?

Brendan Rodgers told Sky Sports on Tuesday that he will play fit-again goalkeeper Craig Gordon in Celtic’s visit of Dundee tonight if he declares himself ready to start.

The 35-year-old has been out since January with a knee problem but could make his return tonight, with Scott Bain ineligible to face his parent club after joining on loan after Gordon was ruled out.

Yesterday, the Celtic boss said: “We are just going to check with Craig just to make sure everything is ok but he has been back in training and if he declares himself fit and ready then he will play.”

Rodgers has another option in the form of Dorus de Vries, but perhaps the fact that he doesn’t even seem to be considering him speaks volumes for the Dutchman’s future in Glasgow.

De Vries, a £1 million signing in 2016 (Scotsman), came in for a bit of criticism for the way in which he deputised for Gordon in the initial month after the latter’s injury and Rodgers’s latest comments make it very difficult to envisage a career for him at Parkhead any longer.

The Northern Irishman only handed the former Swansea City stopper – whom he worked with in South Wales – a contract extension in November. Eyebrows were raised at the time, given that he hadn’t played for Celtic in over a year, but it looks even more shortsighted now by Rodgers.

De Vries has never really looked like a convincing option between the posts, and maybe, just maybe, the penny has now dropped for Rodgers in that regard.
