It is hard not to feel sorry for Rangers centre-back Danny Wilson. Once a Liverpool starlet on the cusp of greatness, now the commanding defender’s future is in doubt at Ibrox.
Interim boss Graeme Murty has moved quickly during his temporary spell in charge, handing out contracts to midfielder Jamie Barjonas and defender Aidan Wilson with more expected to follow.
Wilson’s extension shows Rangers’ desire to blood the 18-year-old into a star for the future, and that is likely to push his namesake down the pecking order at Auchenhowie.
Summer signings Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves are considered first choice, and with the teenage Wilson now likely to be given a chance, 25-year-old Wilson must be wondering what he has left in Glasgow.
Unfortunately, it does not stop there. Ross McCrorie’s emergence into the first team has seen him prosper and could now even keep his place after scoring against Partick Thistle on the weekend.
Making just five appearances this season, it is clear that Wilson is not a part of Murty’s plans and is unlikely to be given the chance to prove his worth when Rangers finally appoint Pedro Caixinha’s successor.
That makes Wilson fifth-choice centre-back, behind Cardoso, Alves, McCrorie and Wilson, with David Bates also vying for a place. Now in the final year of his contract, the January transfer window is a huge month for Wilson.
With so much competition, it is unlikely that the injury-prone ex-Hearts defender will be offered an extension, as caretaker boss Murty has centred his focus around the youth of Rangers.
It means that Wilson must look for a new home in January, or face the second half of the 2017-18 campaign on the sidelines at Rangers, wasting an important chunk of his career.
