What would Ousseynou Cisse arrival at Leeds United mean for Conor Shaughnessy?
If rumours are to be believed, Leeds United are keen on signing MK Dons midfielder Ousseynou Cisse this summer.
Cisse, a Mali international, can play defensive midfield and in central defence and the Whites, According to The Sun on Sunday’s Goals section (27/05; page 8), are interested.
And it makes you wonder what could become of Conor Shaughnessy if the 27-year-old is signed.
Shaughnessy broke into Leeds’ senior squad last summer under Thomas Christiansen and established himself as an exciting young, versatile player, with the Irishman also capable of playing in central defence and a holding role.
Injury meant that the 21-year-old was unavailable from January onwards and therefore it remains to be seen whether Christiansen’s successor Paul Heckingbottom rates him.
But it would be very difficult for the Irishman to play any kind of meaningful role next season if Cisse is signed.
Shaughnessy is at his best as a centre-back, but you have to imagine that Director of Football Victor Orta will bolster this position this summer.
His best chance of having a future in West Yorkshire has to be as a defensive midfielder, but if Cisse is recruited then it seems unlikely that Orta has much confidence in his ability to do a job there.
