Southampton looked set to sell Sam Gallagher when Claude Puel was in charge – but his exit could give Sunderland fresh hope.

Life doesn’t appear to be getting any easier for Sunderland. Without a manager and with their squad likely to be ravaged by departures, whoever takes over at the Stadium of Light faces a tough challenge getting the club ready for the Championship next season.

And, thanks in part to David Moyes’ sudden resignation a month ago, the club haven’t even been able to make their mark in the transfer market. The Scot had personally scouted Hibernian striker Jason Cummings, per The Chronicle, but he has now completed a deal with Nottingham Forest.

Furthermore, Aaron Mooy has agreed a £10 million deal to turn his loan move at Huddersfield Town, as reported by The Examiner, permanent while Efe Ambrose is also likely to stay at Hibernian.

And you wonder whether yet another target could slip through Sunderland’s grasp.

According to The Chronicle, the club were interested in signing Sam Gallagher from Southampton after his impressive loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last season. Despite the Lancashire giants being relegated to League One, the 21-year-old enhanced his reputation with 11 Championship goals.

Southampton appeared all too willing to let Gallagher go with manager Claude Puel seemingly unconvinced. However, with the Frenchman losing his job on Wednesday, you wonder whether this hands a second chance to the homegrown striker.

Cardiff, Aston Villa and Wolves had all been linked in recent weeks but Gallagher has shown at Ewood Park that it may be a little premature for Southampton to give him up.

And this could ruin Sunderland’s hopes of another transfer deal.
