West Bromwich Albion have been long-time admirers of Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez.

With Tony Pulis seeking to strengthen his attacking options this summer, it would have hardly been a surprise if a move for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez was being considered given that they entered talks about a deal last summer (via Sky Sports), remained keen in January (via Daily Mail), and were linked with a move just last month (via Birmingham Mail).

The 27-year-old endured a frustrating season this past campaign, making just nine Premier League starts, subsequently making another 15 appearances from the bench for the Saints.

Given his inability to break into Claude Puel’s plans, it would have perhaps hardly been a surprise if Southampton had been willing to listen to offers for the former Burnley man.

Similarly, it would have hardly been a shock if the Baggies were the team to make the most tempting offer for Rodriguez given how long they have maintained an interest.

But while they may have had some luck in trying to lure the forward away from St Mary’s previously, it is arguably not out of the question to suggest that Puel’s recent departure from the club may scupper any hopes West Brom had of completing a deal.

Of course, the Saints’ next manager may plan to use Rodriguez as sparingly as Puel did and thus, be willing to listen to offers.

But given that the striker has often demonstrated his quality when he has been given a decent chance – his goal against Bournemouth was arguably one of Southampton’s best from this past season – it would not be a surprise if Puel’s replacement was willing to give Rodriguez a chance to impress before making a decision on his future.
