Brendan Rodgers had reportedly been trying to bring Patrick Roberts back to Celtic this summer.

According to a report in the Daily Record, Celtic are chasing Chelsea winger Charly Musonda this summer.

Celtic are said to be prepared to pay £4.5 million for Musonda this summer, with the winger on Brendan Rodgers’ transfer wishlist.

And Celtic’s interest in Musonda could suggest that Patrick Roberts’ permanent move from Manchester City is unlikely.

The Daily Mirror reported earlier in the transfer window that Roberts was on the verge of a switch to Celtic.

However, the move appears to have hit a snag, and Rodgers’ seems to have turned his attention to new targets.

Celtic are unlikely to bring in both Musonda and Roberts in the same transfer window, as they would both be expensive additions for the Glasgow side.

And it may be that Celtic’s move for Musonda is the first indication that they are fighting a losing battle in trying to bring Roberts back to Parkhead for a second spell.
