Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose should be back from injury early next month, but what could it mean for his teammate?

According to a report from the London Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are expecting Danny Rose back from injury in early April, which could mean Ben Davies has up to four more matches to prove he has a long-term future at White Hart Lane, even after he put pen to paper on a new deal.

Davies has been very much second choice at Tottenham in recent times, with Rose becoming arguably the best left-back in the country.

But despite having some hit-and-miss performances when he does feature, Davies’ recent outings in Rose’s absence have suggested he still has plenty to offer Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Davies’ last appearance, in the 3-2 victory against Everton, was one of his best ever in a Tottenham shirt, and he will not want to let go of his starting spot without a fight.

With Tottenham playing Millwall in the FA Cup and Southampton in the league prior to the international break, then Burnley and Swansea City in the first five days of April, Davies may have 360 more minutes of club football to prove his worth.

It will then be up to Pochettino to decide if Rose deserves his place back or if Davies should keep it until he gives the Argentine a reason to make a change.

Signing a new contract is one thing, but seeing it out is another, and much could depend on just how close Davies is to usurping Rose as the club’s first-choice left-back and if he can reach the kind of performance levels that render him undroppable.
