Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly on the verge of agreeing a contract extension with Ben Davies.
Tottenham’s Ben Davies
A recent report from The Sun suggested that Tottenham were looking to agree a new contract with Ben Davies, and were ready to offer the second choice left-back a deal worth £60,000 a week.
With the Welshman set to agree the kind of terms that would arguably be befitting of a player who plays regularly in Mauricio Pochettino’s team, would it perhaps be fair to assume that Spurs are ever so slightly concerned about the future of one of their two left-backs, if not both?
Both Davies (via The Sun) and current first choice Danny Rose (via The Sun) have been linked with moves to Manchester City this year, and given their form, it would hardly be a surprise if City were not the only team chasing their signatures.
Getting Davies tied down on such a good deal should not only help keep the 23-year-old content with being Rose’ understudy, but it should also ensure that he is still with the club if his positional rival has his head turned in the future.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Of course, Tottenham’s desire to get Davies to agree an extension may simply be part of a strategy to ensure that they boast great depth in every position.
But perhaps Spurs fear that not getting the players to make a statement about where they see their future lying could leave the door open for a summer of speculation, and that that uncertainty could perhaps hurt the team during a window where they will be looking to make the kind of signings that they will hope will help elevate them into more serious title contenders.
