The Leeds United winger has struggled to replicate his best form this season.
When Leeds United signed Ezgjan Alioski from Lugano back in the summer it seemed the Whites had grabbed a bargain, with the Macedonia international possessing the innate skill and the goal-return to make a considerable mark at Elland Road.
Early signs were good, with his performance against Nottingham Forest particularly impressive. However since then the 25-year-old has gone off the boil, even if he did find the net against Brentford prior to the latest international break.
However, those Leeds fans who watched Alioski’s performance for his country against Norway this month may have been surprised at just how well their winger performed, delivering a sublime pass to set up Goran Pandev’s 43rd-minute opener, and that moment may have suggested exactly how to get the best out of the player.
Alioski’s outstanding pass into space was only finished off by Pandev’s impressive movement – something Leeds loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga does not exactly have in abundance.
The German forward is more of a target man, relying on balls to feet rather than forcing him to second-guess his teammate’s next move, and that is something Leeds should have considered when they went about their summer business.
The return of Caleb Ekuban could see a different Leeds attack in the months ahead, but one wonders if Alioski has been shortchanged by those tasked with finishing off the play.
Of course, the Leeds winger should be scoring more of his own, but we saw this week what he is capable of if he has a striker willing to run into space.
