The Tottenham Hotspur defender started against Liverpool but looked well below his best.

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans have been baffled by Kevin Wimmer’s lack of chances this season, with the Austrian international only making the bench twice in the Premier League and only getting minutes in the EFL Cup.
Wimmer started in that competition on Tuesday evening against Liverpool, and he was a shadow of the player who impressed in Jan Vertonghen’s absence last season.

Those performances were the catalyst for Tottenham fans’ calls to see Wimmer given a chance when Toby Alderweireld was side-lined earlier this month, but on recent evidence one wonders if it is in fact the former Atletico Madrid man that makes the Austrian look good.
It is worth noting that Wimmer is lacking match practice and was playing alongside 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers at Anfield. However he looked woefully short of the player who impressed time and again last season, quickly becoming something of a fan favourite in the process.

Wimmer may return to his best and prove the doubters wrong, but just how many more chances he will get this season remains to be seen.
Alderweireld is a class act who makes everything easier for his defensive partner, yet when it comes to Wimmer one wonders if Tottenham fans will only ever see the best of him when he is partnered with the Belgian…and how often that will even happen before he moves on.
