Former Rangers striker Dodds believes that while Taylor is a good player who has experience in England, the 30-year-old is not going to start for the Gers.
Rangers will be aiming to stop bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic from winning the Scottish Premiership title for the 10th season in a row in 2020-21.
According to TEAMtalk, Rangers are among a number of clubs who want to sign Taylor on a free transfer this summer.
The Montserrat international striker, who is out of contract at the Addicks at the end of the month, has told Sky Sports that he does not plan on training or playing for the Championship club.
Dodds told The Scottish Sun: “I have seen reports the boy Lyle Taylor is being linked with an Ibrox move as well.
“He is a good player, there is no doubt, and he has gained a lot of experience in England over the last few years.
“Is he going to be good enough to be a starter to stop Celtic? I’m not so sure, but he would be a good option to have as cover.”
Good option on the bench
Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe are the two main strikers at Rangers, and it is hard to see Taylor – or any other player who can play upfront – change that.
Morelos is the clear first-choice striker, and a new signing in that department will have to fight with Defoe, who is a proven goalscorer and remains a key figure in Gerrard’s team.
