Doctors give verdict on van Ginkel’s ankle injury

Chelsea owned midfielder Marco van Ginkel suffered a nightmare debut on loan to AC Milan as he sustained an ankle injury.

Marco van Ginkel limped off 30 minutes into his Milan debut and it has been confirmed that he has suffered ligament damage in his ankle.

The Dutchman was sent to San Siro to gain some first-team experience, but during a 2-2 draw with Empoli he was stretchered off with an ice pack on his ankle.

The injury came almost exactly a year since he tore his anterior cruciate ligament against Swindon Town in the Capital One Cup, effectively ending his campaign and his World Cup dream.

Milan’s doctors today released a statement on the severity of the injury, which looks set to rule van Ginkel out for around a month.

“Milan would like to communicate that during the game against Empoli, Marco van Ginkel suffered a sprained ankle with ligament damage,” the club confirmed. “The extent of the injury will be determined after more tests.”

It is the worst possible start to life in Serie A for van Ginkel and his loss will be a blow to Milan boss Pippo Inzaghi, who has seen his side go off the boil after an encouraging start to the campaign.
