Ahmed Elmohamady has told Mahmoud Trezeguet on Twitter to ‘do your thing’ after Aston Villa loaned him out to İstanbul Başakşehir, as the club confirmed on Tuesday.
Trezeguet has only appeared for a brief period under his new boss, Steven Gerrard, because of his return from a long-term injury and then his participation at the recently-concluded, Africa Cup of Nations duty.
It was heartbreak for the winger out in Cameroon, with Egypt cruelly losing on penalties against Senegal.
But given the length of time Trezeguet was out for previously, and that he wasn’t a first-team regular anyway, Villa are seemingly happy for him to earn some minutes elsewhere.
The 27-year-old isn’t the only senior player who has left on loan since Gerrard took charge, Anwar El Ghazi joined Everton, to seemingly warm their bench, whilst Matt Targett moved to St James’ Park.
Nonetheless, when Trezeguet’s departure was announced, ex-Villa man, Elmohamady, sent this message to his fellow countryman.
In truth, this probably signals the start of the end of Trezeguet’s career in the West Midlands.
Whilst he has produced a few magic moments, here and there, from last-minute winners against Leicester City to crucial goals when Villa survived relegation.
He just hasn’t been able to produce consistent performances and the right call has been made to let him leave.
Added with that, in Gerrard’s narrow formation, where he prefers the more one-touch and quick-thinking footballers, it just doesn’t suit Trezeguet’s game.
