Some Celtic supporters struggled to believe what they were seeing as an Istanbul Basaksehir side featuring Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo beat Manchester United 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Basaksehir had lost both of their previous games in the competition, in which this is their first ever campaign, but made it third-time lucky at the Fatih Terim Stadium.

Bolingoli-Mbombo was making only his seventh appearance for the Turkish champions, whom he joined on loan from Celtic in the summer.

His departure, which came little more than a year after he arrived at Celtic Park in a £3 million move from Rapid Vienna, came after he breached the Scottish Football Association’s Covid-19 regulations.

But he appears to have made a positive impression on the Bhoys fans who watched him against United…

Celtic, who already employ the Scotland international Greg Taylor in Bolingoli-Mbombo’s position, signed Diego Laxalt on loan from AC Milan as the Belgian’s successor.

Neil Lennon’s side failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage for the second successive season, dropping instead to the Europa League.
