Blackburn Rovers have benefitted from Sam Gallagher’s superb aerial prowess this season and he could be a great option for Newcastle United.

The summer transfer window may not be open just yet but early speculation gives an indication about Rafael Benitez’s plans at Newcastle United.

From Harry Maguire to Sam Clucas, Tom Cairney to Carl Jenkinson, it appears that the Spaniard has a hankering for young, British talent at St James’ Park. After chief scout Graham Carr’s divisive Francophile approach, bringing homegrown players to Newcastle may go down well with supporters.

Therefore, it would make perfect sense for Newcastle to throw their hat into the ring for a striker on the radar of a number of rival clubs – including North East neighbours Sunderland.

According to the Daily Mail, manager David Moyes has personally scouted Blackburn Rovers loanee Sam Gallagher this season, with his future uncertain at parent club Southampton.

With Jermain Defoe almost certain to leave in the summer, the powerful targetman would be tasked with replacing the irreplaceable. But, having scored 12 league goals this season and impressing with his work-rate, the 21-year-old is a proven talent in the second tier and a good fit for Moyes’ direct gameplan.

Better than Mitrovic?

Though he would certainly fit the bill at Newcastle too. Benitez will surely be in the market for a new centre-forward due to the over-reliance on Dwight Gayle this season. And Gallagher, renowned for his aerial prowess, could represent an astute replacement for the out-of-favour, out-of-form Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Furthermore, with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley putting in place a transfer policy designed to target young, affordable players with large re-sale potential, signing Gallagher would surely be well received in the boardroom as well as the dugout.
