Liverpool fans on Twitter were left seething after Martin Tyler suggested that the Premier League champions should give Chelsea a ‘guard of honour’ before yesterday’s encounter, which was broadcast on Sky Sports Premier League (22/07/20).
Chelsea’s win against Manchester City last month started Liverpool’s title celebrations, and since then, a number of teams have been forming a guard of honour for the champions.
Frank Lampard’s men did just that before they were beaten 5-3 in a pulsating clash at Anfield, but comments by Sky Sports’ main commentator before Wednesday’s match has angered a number of Reds supporters.
“Chelsea are giving Liverpool a guard of honour,” Tyler told Sky Sports. “But perhaps it should be the other way around because it was Chelsea’s beating of Manchester City which confirmed Liverpool as champions.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men are 18 points clear of second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League table and it could be more if they better City’s results on the final day of the season.
That in itself is proof that the current European Cup holders needed the help of nobody to end their long wait for a title.
Whilst the London club faintly pushed the Merseysiders over the line by beating Pep Guardiola’s men, Tyler’s suggestion was staggering and that is echoed by the Anfield faithful on social media.
Some have questioned why he hates Liverpool so much, whilst others are just seemingly sick and tired of his commentary when their team is playing.
