If Tottenham Hotspur want to compete in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 2018, they need to beef up a flimsy squad.

When you can call on a striker as lethal as Harry Kane, you are never going to be short on goals. In recent times, however, the back-up options have left a lot to be desired with Fernando Llorente doing little better this season than Vincent Janssen did in 2016/17.

So Hoffenheim’s Mark Uth, who Spurs were linked with back in January by The Mirror, should be on their radar again with six months remaining on his deal. Uth has gone from useful squad player to star man in the Bundesliga this season, netting nine goals already including two in a stunning win against Bayern Munich.

A clever finisher who has the vision and technique to play in a deeper role, it seems only a matter of time before Uth is rewarded with his first Germany cap.

Leon Goretzka

Moussa Dembele’s time at Tottenham appears to be ticking down so a new box-to-box powerhouse could be required very soon. And who better than Germany star Leon Goretzka, the so-called ‘new Michael Ballack’ who looks very much the real deal?

Always a precocious talent, the 22-year-old has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s best in 2017. He has outshone long-standing Spurs target Max Meyer in a resurgent Schalke side and also stood out as Germany won the Confederations Cup this summer, scoring three times overall.

Spurs will likely face competition from Arsenal, according to The Mirror. But, if it is a clinical and tenacious enforcer Tottenham want, Goretzka is their man.

Diego Laxalt

Hardly a household name but Genoa’s Uruguayan ace Laxalt has been linked with a move to England more and more in recent months. Though it’s London rivals West Ham who have been the most heavily tipped to sign him, reportedly making a bid of £9million in the summer according to Corriere Dello Sport (page 18, July 24th).

But while Laxalt is not an elite talent, he could be an excellent addition to Spurs’ squad. A versatile left-sider, he can play on either the wing or at full-back – potentially providing back-up to Ben Davies if Danny Rose does bid farewell in 2018.

Energetic and forceful, Laxalt is a modern full-back and exactly the kind of talent Mauricio Pochettino tends to go for.
