Rolando Aarons has left Premier League Newcastle United to join Gareth Ainsworth’s League One high-flyers Wycombe Wanderers on loan.
Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has been left pinching himself in disbelief after the League One outfit managed to land Rolando Aarons on loan from Newcastle United on the final day of the transfer window, speaking to the club’s official website.
Fans of the Chairboys have already had plenty to cheer about this season.
Wycombe have defied pre-season expectations to sit fifth in the table after six games, ahead of Sunderland, Peterborough and Fleetwood Town. And in David Wheeler and Fred Onyedinma, Ainsworth has two forwards capable of making a real difference at third-tier level.
But Aarons could be the best of the lot.
At 23 and with a series of injuries leaving his once dazzling reputation in tatters, Aarons has been offered a fresh start at Adams Park after being left out of Newcastle’s 25-man Premier League squad. And, as Ainsworth himself puts it, this is a real ‘coup’ for a club like Wycombe.
“I’m delighted to be able to bring Rolando to the club and I think it’s a real coup to attract someone of his calibre to Adams Park,” the former QPR midfielder said.
“We’ve started the season really well, particularly at home where we’ve played some fantastic attacking football, and Rolando will complement our style with his pace and ability to run at players and create chances for himself and others.”
Ainsworth might just be the perfect coach to help kick-start Aarons’ career. The affable 46-year-old, with his flowing locks and rock-star image, is a likeable and still underrated coach who frequently gets the best out of the often limited players at his disposal.
Aarons should offer a flash of game-changing quality in a Wycombe side desperate to maintain a terrific start to a very promising campaign.
