West Bromwich Albion midfielder Sam Field was linked with a move to Rangers in the final days of the summer transfer window.

It is two years since Tony Pulis told the BBC West Midlands that the highly-rated Baggies youngster was “technically as good and as gifted as any footballer I’ve seen at that age.”
Since then, however, Field has been limited to the odd cameo appearance and a first-team start once in a blue moon. So maybe the England U20 international would have been better off joining Rangers on loan after all.
According to the Guardian back in August, Field could have moved on loan to Ibrox as part of a proposed deal that would see James Tavernier (below) move to West Brom.
Since then, however, 20-year-old Field has played just four minutes of football in the Baggies’ Championship campaign. And, with Darren Moore’s side flying high in second place, it seems unlikely that he will be able to force his way into the starting XI any time soon.
That is not to say Field would have been better off at Rangers. Central midfield is probably the strongest area of Steven Gerrard’s squad with Stuart Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly all impressing since arriving in Glasgow over the summer.
But surely Field has outgrown U23 football. A short-term loan move in January, perhaps to a lower-level Championship club, would do the gifted midfielder the world of good.
