According to the Independent, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has handed the Argentine a £120 million transfer budget to go out and strengthen a team that appears to be constantly on the verge of doing something very special without having the squad depth to get over the line.
Typically, Pochettino is targeting young rising stars with real top class potential. But reports in the Independent that Pochettino wants a reunion with his former Southampton star Jay Rodriguez do seem, initially at least, a little underwhelming.
Rodriguez has been West Brom’s best player in a dismal season, netting seven times in the Premier League since his £12 million move last summer.
He scored the shock winner at Old Trafford last Sunday, netted two in a 3-2 FA Cup win at Anfield, and has put aside the fitness problems that have dogged him since that cruciate ligament injury which ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup.
But Rodriguez is far from a top class centre-forward and, while he would be a better back-up for Harry Kane than Vincent Janssen or Fernando Llorente, is the former Burnley man really a striker who could make the difference in the Champions League or a title race?
At 28, you wonder how much better he can really get either.
Yes, Pochettino knows Rodriguez well. But, if Tottenham really want to push on, they should use that £120million budget to sign someone a little better.
