Tottenham Hotspur want a new defender this summer and are planning to raid Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion or Swansea City.

With Tottenham Hotspur looking likely to cash in on Toby Alderweireld this summer, having put a £44 million price-tag on the centre-backs head according to HLN, chairman Daniel Levy will have a rather considerable wad of cash burning a hole in his pocket.

But that does not mean that Spurs are necessarily willing to spend it all on a replacement for the influential Belgian defender.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham have joined a number of Premier League clubs in expressing an interest in West Brom’s Jonny Evans, who will be available for just £3 million when the seemingly-doomed Baggies are relegated this season.

Now, Evans is a defender with real top level experience, having made around 250 appearances in the top flight of English football. He has also won the Premier League three times, played countless matches in the Champions League and is a proven leader.

He would also cost around £37 million less than Swansea City would demand for Alfie Mawson, per The Times.

But all these factors may not add up to prove that Evans would be the better signing. At 30, he is six years older than Mawson and at the other end of his career.

Evans’ form has been far from impressive of late and there has been a clear decline on last season, contributing somewhat to West Brom’s position at the bottom of the Premier League.

While Mawson, albeit a player with a lot of room for improvement, is on the up. He has had another promising campaign for Swansea and looks to be in with an excellent chance of forcing himself into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

The decision is simple for Tottenham; buy an experienced yet ageing player on the cheap or gamble on a player with huge potential for a far bigger fee.
