Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke may leave the Premier League for a loan spell in Scotland – but Steven Gerrard’s Rangers look the most likely destination.
Steven Gerrard has only been Rangers’ manager for a matter of days and already he is trying to succeed where his former Liverpool mentor Brendan Rodgers failed.
One year on, however, Solanke is again being linked with a move to Glasgow. But it is Rangers who are now leading the chase with Gerrard putting a loan move for the 20-year-old striker at the top of his list of summer priorities, as reported by the Scottish Sun.
And Rangers might have an advantage where Celtic did not. Gerrard, who spent his entire professional career at Liverpool and worked with the U18s for a year before being unveiled by Rangers, obviously has friends in high places at Anfield and it is expected that he will be able to sign a few of the clubs youngsters on loan to kick-start a mutually beneficial partnership.
This is the sort of pulling power and connections Gerrard will give Rangers, and the 37-year-old would be hoping that signing a player Celtic missed out on just a year ago would perhaps herald the first step towards breaking down the Hoops’ monopolisation of the Scottish game.
Would Rangers signing Solanke be a turning point – a sign that Celtic can no longer dominate the transfer market north of the border?
For all Rodgers’ reputation, exciting young talents like Solanke may jump at the chance to learn from a legendary figure like Gerrard.
