Gareth McAuley has made just one Scottish Premiership appearance for Rangers and West Bromwich Albion have struggled without him.

As it stands, Gareth McAuley’s summer move to Rangers has not exactly worked out.
The 38-year-old centre-back moved to Ibrox on a one-year deal in September but he is yet to make any sort of an impression north of the border. In fact, McAuley has only featured in one league game so far, coming off the bench to make his debut in Sunday’s 7-1 thrashing of Motherwell.
With Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall ahead of him for now, it seems that the Northern Ireland veteran is fourth in the pecking order.
So would he have been better off remaining at West Brom instead? And should the Baggies, with the benefit of hindsight, have done more to keep him?
After seven years of loyal service, West Brom released their long-serving centre-back but, in his absence, the Baggies have looked increasingly shaky at the back.

West Brom have conceded 25 goals this season, a record bettered by only six Championship clubs. And this Achilles heel could eventually cost Darren Moore’s side dear in the promotion race.
McAuley, however, would have provided plenty of consistency and leadership at the back. So maybe it is time to wonder whether his switch to Rangers has worked out badly for all parties as it stands.
