Connor Ronan is on loan at League One Portsmouth from Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers and might stay at Fratton Park.
Portsmouth fans have taken Connor Ronan to their hearts. The Wolves loanee moved to Fratton Park in January on a six-month loan deal and, although he has failed to score or assist a goal in his nine League One appearances, he has impressed with his lively and dynamic displays in attack.
And it is not just the Pompey fans who have been won over by this hard-working 20-year-old. The former Wolves boss Kenny Jackett, now manager of Portsmouth, has made it clear that he would love to keep Ronan next season, too.
‘He’s a player we’re obviously interested in,” the 56-year-old told the Portsmouth News.
But should Wolves fans be worried about the prospect of letting Ronan leave, despite the fact he played just 29 minutes of Championship football in the first half of the season?
Possibly. It is hard to see where the youngster, who joined from Rochdale in 2014, would fit into this Wolves side with Ivan Cavaleiro, Helder Costa, Diogo Jota and co all ahead of him in the pecking order and with the Championship leaders set to spend very big indeed upon their promotion to the Premier League.
Yes, Wolves might have big ambitions and money to burn but, if Ronan is sold, that will only raise suggestions that the club may be willing to dispense with their most exciting academy prospects and replace them with big-money imports.
Some would say this is the price that must be paid for progress. But time will tell whether this will come at the cost of Wolves’ roots.
