Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom is a big fan of Josh Brownhill, whose future at Championship rivals Bristol City remains uncertain.
The freedom to sign better, bigger name players was surely one of the reasons Paul Heckingbottom decided to jump ship from Barnsley and head across Yorkshire to Leeds United earlier this month.
According to the Sun (17 February, page 60), the newly appointed Leeds boss has been a big fan of Josh Brownhill since he had a loan spell at Oakwell two seasons ago.
And it is understood that he would be keen to take the player to Elland Road if the opportunity should present itself this summer.
Brownhill appeared to put speculation over his future to an end when he signed a three-and-a-half year contract to stay at Ashton Gate back in December. But, in a surprising twist, the Sun reports that Bristol City are now running the risk of losing the 22-year-old as talks over his long-term future at the club stall.
And if Leeds are handed a chance to sign the former Preston midfielder in the summer, surely they should not think twice.
Brownhill has been one of the Championship’s surprise packages this season for a Bristol City side who, until recently, had looked set to fight for promotion. And, in truth, he would probably represent an immediate improvement in Leeds’ starting XI.
The versatile Brownhill, who has impressed in the centre and wide right this season, has the energy, dynamism and forward thrust that Leeds have often lacked in a one-paced midfield in recent months.
He would be an excellent foil to the more defensively minded and conservative Adam Forshaw or Eunan O’Kane, giving Heckingbottom a different dimension going forward.
