Newcastle United want to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic – and Southampton want to get rid of a few strikers too.
Southampton could be about to make a very bold approach to solving their goalscoring problems. By selling all three of their strikers in the January transfer window.
Gabbiadini (below), a big money signing from Napoli in January, scored six in his first four games for the club but has failed to really fire since, scoring just once from open play since August. Meanwhile, all of Austin’s nine league appearances under Mauricio Pellegrino have come from the bench while Shane Long is without a goal since the spring.
But with Premier League rivals Newcastle United also in the market for a new number nine, could there be potential for a swap deal?
After all, The Guardian did report last week that Southampton were interested in offering Newcastle’s out-of-favour frontman Aleksandar Mitrovic in January. The Serb’s firebrand attitude means he has fallen on the wrong side of Rafa Benitez – but proved in 2015/16 that he has the ability to score at a decent rate in England’s top flight.
And with Newcastle seemingly only too willing to sell, perhaps they should kill two birds with one stone and find an immediate replacement for Mitrovic. Gabbiadini, in particular, would be a hugely popular addition with his class and eye for the spectacular – and not to mention the fact that Rafael Benitez knows him from his time at Napoli.
Something to consider for both Southampton and Newcastle perhaps.
