Fabian Schar cannot stop scoring.

Just six days after netting a valuable equaliser against Watford with a volley dispatched in supremely clinical fashion, the Newcastle United star finished off a glorious team move to earn Switzerland a point in Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier away to the Republic of Ireland.

Making a perfectly timed run into the penalty area, Schar curled home a sublime effort that Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes or Steven Gerrard would have been proud of. That was his sixth goal for club and country in 2019 alone.

14 months after Newcastle triggered the £3 million release clause in his Deportivo La Coruna contract, as reported by the Guardian, the marauding 27-year-old continues to go from strength to strength.

There are few centre-halves in world football right now who can match Schar for confidence on the ball and finishing ability, though his quality in the attacking third should not distract from his accomplished reading of the game at the other end of the pitch.

Schar is pretty much the prototype of the complete footballer; the best £3 million you will ever spend in the modern era.
