Wolverhampton Wanderers can make a real statement if they beat Manchester City to the youngster.

James Maddison of Norwich City celebrates victory after the Sky Bet Championship match between Ipswich Town and Norwich City at Portman Road on October 22, 2017 in Ipswich, England.

With the inflation of the transfer market tricking down to the Championship, we should perhaps not be surprised to learn that Norwich City have slapped a £20 million price-tag on the head of star man James Maddison.

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur have been tracking the gifted play-maker since before he joined Norwich from Coventry City back in 2016 and are prepared to renew their interest this month.

Norwich do not want to sell after losing Alex Pritchard to Huddersfield Town, however, and will demand top dollar for arguably the most impressive midfielder in the Championship this season.

The report adds that Liverpool, Leicester and even Manchester City are hot on the trail of the England under-21 international.

So what an opportunity this is for Wolverhampton Wanderers to make perhaps their biggest statement of intent yet. The Express and Star stated last week that runaway Championship leaders Wolves are already identifying targets who would be ready to play in the Premier League and Maddison is on that list.

But with Norwich not willing to accept a dime less than £20 million, Wolves would have to break their transfer record for the fourth time since the club was taken over by Chinese investors Fosun back in 2016, eclipsing the £15.8 million they paid Porto for Ruben Neves.

Neves, as well as Diego Jota and Ivan Cavaleiro, have proven to be excellent signings by Wolves. But nabbing Maddison form under the nose of Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City would show once and for all that this side is a force to be reckoned with.
