Wolves releasing Silvio looks justified as defender’s career stalls

Silvio left Wolverhampton Wanderers back in June but is still on the lookout for a new club.

Thanks to the extensive and star-studded contact book of Jorge Mendes, Wolverhampton Wanderers are top of the Championship table and looking good for a place in the Premier League next season.

Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and manager Nuno Espirito Santo have transformed last season’s mid-table side into league leaders – and all arrived at Molineux as clients of the influential Portuguese super-agent.

But such successes were not quite as common last season. It is easy to forget that Mendes’s involvement came under fire from some supporters last season with his first few imports struggling to make the required impact.

Like Silvio, for instance. The 30-year-old joined last summer from Atletico Madrid on a one-year deal with the option of a second season.

But after an injury-hit debut season resulted in just five appearances, it was little surprise that Wolves did not take up their option to sign the experienced right-back on a permanent deal – leading to him leaving Molinuex upon the expiry of his contract.

Five months on, however, Silvio is yet to get his career back on track. In fact, he still has not found a new club.

According to Correio da Manha, Silvio is training with Primeira Liga side Belenenses with a view to maintaining his fitness and earning a deal in the January transfer window.

But with Matt Douglas starring in his place on the right hand side of Wolves’ defence, it appears that Silvio would not have found much game time if he had stayed in the Black Country either.
