Ryan Sessegnon was once again the inspiration for Slavisa Jokanovic’s high-flyers while Newcastle United loanee Aleksandar Mitrovic underlined his potential with a superb strike to clinch a hugely impressive win.
But McDonald, situated at the base of midfield, was the man who pulled all the strings. Flanked by the more creative Tom Cairney and Stefan Johansen, the 29-year-old ran the midfield with a pass accuracy close to 90 per cent, while restricting Wolves from settling into their rhythm.
In the absence of the suspended Ruben Neves, Wolves had no answer with Romain Saiss and Alfred N’Diaye unable to instil the same kind of class or leadership in the centre of the park.
No wonder some Wolves fans would jump at the chance to bring McDonald back to Molineux.
The Black Country side allowed McDonald to leave for Fulham in the summer of 2016 for a bargain fee of just £1.25 million, as reported by Sky Sports.
Since then, however, the bizarrely uncapped Scot has evolved into one of the Championship’s most complete midfielders – one many Wolves supporters wish had never been allowed to leave the Midlands.
