Joe Mason needs to leave Championship flyers Wolverhampton Wanderers and a move to Nottingham Forest could appeal.

If Joe Mason had been struggling to get into Wolves’ side last season, he does not stand much chance now with the Championship leaders boasting some of the most exciting and gifted attackers the second tier has ever seen.

Mason only started 18 league games for Wolves over the last two seasons and saw a loan spell at Burton Albion at the start of this campaign cut short after just six appearances.

As reported by the Burton Mail, his sudden exit from the Pirelli was due to illness rather than form, but it is fair to say Mason didn’t exactly set the world alight during his time with Nigel Clough’s side.

So a summer exit looks to be on the cards for a player who has been left behind by Wolves’ sudden emergence as one of Europe’s most exciting football projects.

It remains to be seen, however, who is willing to take a chance on Mason, who moved to Molineux in 2016 from Cardiff City for around £3 million, as reported by Wales Online, but has struggled with injuries since.

HITC sources in July told us that Nottingham Forest were keen but a move to the City Ground might now have passed the 26-year-old by. After all, there is a new management team at Forest with neither Frank MacParland nor Mark Warburton calling the shots over recruitment any longer.

On the other hand, however, talented youngsters like Ben Brereton, Barrie McKay and co have not performed with any regularity of late while Daryl Murphy is a shadow of his prolific Ipswich Town best.

In total, Forest have not scored in their last three outings and, if this profligacy continues, Mason should come into consideration again with his availability at the end of the season looking inevitable.
