Premier League duo Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers both reportedly want a Manchester United defender – Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo.

Manchester United are long overdue an overhaul of their defensive options, and Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton are just two of the clubs allegedly circling in a bid to pick up the scraps from Old Trafford.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Wolves are on red alert with Marcos Rojo expected to leave United in the near future.

The Sun claims that Everton want Chris Smalling, with Marco Silva sending scouts to watch him on multiple occasions. For whatever reason, the Toffees manager seems to be a fan of the error-prone England international, although United would demand £30 million should they wish to sell in January.

But if one of Wolves or Everton succeeds, would that consign the other to failure?

Manchester United have not made multiple January signings for a decade now, meaning they are unlikely to be willing to let both Rojo and Smalling leave in the same transfer window.

That means that, if United give Wolves permission to sign Rojo or hand Everton the chance to land Smalling, surely only one deal could go ahead.

The question, however, is which team needs a new defender more? Everton have seen a major improvement in Michael Keane and Yerry Mina looks impressive, but Phil Jagielka is past his peak and Kurt Zouma is only on loan from Chelsea.

Wolves, however, have the fourth best defensive record in the Premier League but there is a lack of depth behind Connor Coady, Willy Boly and Ryan Bennett.
