Spurs are reported to be interested in Wolverhampton Wanderers right-wing back Matt Doherty after his outstanding debut Premier League season.
In the last few transfer windows, Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Raul Jimenez, Willy Boly and Rui Patricio. But arguably the best pound-for-pound signing in Wolves’ current squad cost just £75,000.
That is the fee the Premier League side paid Bohemians to sign rampaging right-wing back Matt Doherty back in 2010, as reported by the Express and Star.
In the eight years since, Doherty has gone from promising youngster to first-team regular to Premier League star. The Republic of Ireland international has been a revelation in Wolves’ first season back in the top flight, scoring three goals from his role on the wide right.
And, according to The Irish Independent, Doherty’s swashbuckling displays have caught the eye of title-chasing Tottenham Hotspur, who could potentially see him as a replacement for the exit-linked Serge Aurier.
But, the report adds, Doherty is happy at Wolves and he could be set for a new contract which would double his current £20,000-a-week wages. And, in hindsight, the £75,000 Wolves paid to sign the fresh-faced Irishman almost a decade ago looks like a drop in the ocean.
Because with clubs of Spurs’ calibre interested, Wolves could expect to make an almighty profit on one of their best bargain signings in recent years.
Pat Fenlon, the manager who gave Doherty his break at Bohemians, told the Independent that he is worth around £20 million in today’s market after all.
