Diego Simeone’s La Liga challengers Atletico Madrid reportedly want to sign Romain Saiss from Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Hands up if you had heard of Romain Saiss when he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers from Angers in 2016. The Moroccan international’s Wikipedia page certainly had a busy day when he arrived at Molineux, with the vast majority of fans wondering who on earth they had just signed.

But it is testament to how far Saiss has come during his time at Wolves that he has been linked with one of the biggest, most successful clubs in modern European football two-and-a-half years later.

According to Lions De L’Atlas, none other than Atletico Madrid are keen to bring the 28-year-old to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Diego Simeone seemingly views Saiss as a man who could offer depth in the centre of the park for a side with ambitions of going all the way in La Liga and the Champions League.

Whether Saiss is good enough for a club of Atletico’s stature is up for debate. What cannot be argued, however, is that the versatile enforcer has been one of the biggest success stories of the Fosun reign at Molineux.

He might have started just eight Premier League games this season but he has impressed whenever he’s been given a chance. And Saiss was arguably the unsung hero as Wolves cruised to the Championship title in 2017/18.

If Atletico are willing to make an offer, Wolves can expect to make a big profit on a player they bought for just £3.5 million, according to Transfermarkt. And their interest highlights the huge improvements he has made in two-and-a-half years in English football.
