Alan Shearer claimed that Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Premier League skipper Conor Coady could play for Gareth Southgate’s England side.

The sudden rise of Conor Coady has mirrored that of his club in recent seasons.

The former Liverpool youngster was merely a useful utility player at Wolverhampton Wanderers a few years ago, switching largely between defensive midfield and right-back.

But Coady has improved beyond belief since Nuno Espirito Santo arrived at Molineux in the summer of 2017. Now, he is the captain of a Premier League club, having taken to a new role at centre-back like a duck to water.

Speaking on Match of the Day after Wolves’ 1-0 win at Crystal Palace (6 October, 10.25pm), Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer described Coady as ‘absolutely magnificent’ and predicted that it would only be a matter of time before he was rewarded with an England call-up.

It is fair to say Coady was taken aback by Shearer’s praise.

“It was fantastic to hear what he said, being the legend that he is,” the 25-year-old gushed on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (9 October, 9:00am). “I’ve watched Match of the Day all my life, I nearly fell off the couch!

“If (an England call-up) ever came it would be brilliant but I’m not thinking about it too much. I’m just focusing on Wolves.”

Wolves have picked up 15 points already, meaning only six newly promoted sides in Premier League history have made a better start to life in the top flight.

And with the likes of Coady providing both quality and mental strength, there is no reason why Nuno’s high-flyers cannot fight for a place in Europe at the end of this season.
