Back in the summer months, the upcoming campaign had Wolves fans excited and hoping for a promotion push.
Wolves boss Paul Lambert has admitted to the Express & Star that it will be difficult to turn the club’s fortunes around due to the huge number of inexperienced players within his squad.
Saturday’s home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, characterised by a number of key defensive errors, means Wolves have picked up just three points from their last ten Championship fixtures; a calamitous run of form that has them above the drop zone on goal-difference alone.
Such a position is a far cry from the expectations of the club’s ambitious new owners, the Chinese conglomerate Fosun International, who pledged to return Wolves to the Premier League via huge investment in the transfer market.
Consequently, a number of foreign imports arrived at Molineux in the summer, including record-signing Ivan Cavaleiro from Monaco, but most have failed to consistently impress thus far with the exception of tricky forward Helder Costa (below).
And Lambert believes their inexperience in the notoriously testing Championship will make it difficult for him to transform the club’s fortunes.
“We’re looking behind us,” Lambert admitted to the Express & Star. “If you don’t do that you’re naive. We have to get ourselves out of this position.
“We’re just in the door and we have to get away from that.
“There are a lot of new players, some lads who don’t know the league and what it entails. We’re going to have to hit the ground running pretty soon.”
More than 27,000 fans turned up to support their struggling side at Molineux on Saturday; the club’s largest attendance in more than 18 months.
However, patience will be wearing thin unless Lambert can improve performances and results in the coming months.
