Any dreams of promotion appear a long way off now, with Wolves hovering above the drop zone.
Wolves boss Paul Lambert has told the Express & Star that his young defenders must be more streetwise as his second game in charge ended in a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
After stalling badly under Italian Walter Zenga, Lambert appeared to have rejuvenated the Wolves squad since taking charge, with striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson claiming that the intensity in training had fostered a better mentality within the camp.
However, positive performances behind the scenes are yet to translate on to the pitch, with Fernando Forestieri and Kieran Lee netting to consign the ‘Old Gold’ to a ninth consecutive winless game in the Championship.
Wolves started strongly, however, with Conor Coady wasting a good chance to net the opener before Forestieri scored from the spot after the hosts failed to deal with a long ball.
In truth, defensive frailties were evident throughout at Molineux and Lambert, who recently stated his desire to give youth a chance, admitted that his inexperienced back-line must improve in order to avoid a repeat of crucial errors.
“The penalty changes the course of the game,” the former Aston Villa boss told the Express & Star
“The ball should never have travelled 70 yards across and we should still have cleared it at the back post – I thought Kortney was favourite to clear it. There’s no debate on the penalty.
“For the second goal we actually have the ball and we lose it.
“So it’s individual errors. We’ve got two young 21-year-olds [Dominic Iorfa, below, and Kortney Hause] in the back line who’ve played a lot of games but we need to be more streetwise than that.”
Wolves have now picked up a dismal three points from the last 27 available; a run that has seen them slip to the verge of the drop zone and level on points with third-from-bottom Cardiff City.
However, with such a young squad at his disposal, Lambert may have a challenge in turning their fortunes around.
