Saidy Janko is reportedly a target for Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers but struggled in Forest’s EFL Cup defeat at Burton Albion.
Aitor Karanka’s reaction said it all after Nottingham Forest were stunned by Burton Albion in the EFL Cup fourth round on Tuesday night.
A Saidy Janko own goal and strikes from Scott Fraser and Southampton loanee Jake Hesketh fired Nigel Clough’s Brewers – who beat Aston Villa earlier in the competition – into the quarter-finals at the expense of their big-spending Championship opponents.
And Karanka was understandably furious.
“I am angry, a lot,” the Spaniard told Sky Sports.
“I feel embarrassed, I feel bad because a team that is in League One and has played four games in the last 10 days with mainly the same players were much better than us.”
Janko in particular appears to have attracted plenty of criticism and understandably so. His first-half own goal and all-round poor performance at both ends of the pitch was worrying to say the least and in stark contrast to the impressive displays he produced early in his Forest career.
The former Celtic and Manchester United youngster is on loan at Forest from FC Porto. The Sun reported that Wolves were interested in handing Janko a Premier League opportunity when his spell at the City Ground came to an end.
On last night’s evidence, however, both Forest and Wolves may be put off keeping Janko for the long-term.
