The 26-year-old may be in need of a new scenary after failing to win over Rodgers at Celtic – and Wolves are in need of a goalscorer.
Leigh Griffiths might have only inked a new contract until 2021 in December 2015. Crucially, however, that was before Brendan Rodgers arrived to shake up the Celtic squad.
In a situation not too dissimilar to the standout between Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero at Manchester City, the future of Celtic’s top scorer has suddenly come under question following the appointment of a highly-rated, highly-demanding coach.
Griffiths may have scored an incredible 40 goals in 51 games in Celtic colours last season but that matters little to Rodgers. Especially when Moussa Dembele is threatening to better those figures himself the following campaign.
“Leigh has to work on every aspect of being a professional,” the manager told the Daily Record of Griffiths, who has started just ten league games this season. “Talent is not enough.”
The 26-year-old may be a guaranteed goalscorer but, as the same publication adds, Rodgers demands far more than poachers instinct from his centre-forwards. Ongoing concerns over his fitness levels don’t help either.
Therefore, if Dembele does resist the temptation of a Bayern or a Madrid in the summer, you feel that something has to give. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Griffiths could be tempted away if regular starts remain elusive.
And if there’s one club who appreciates his talents it’s his old-employers. Wolverhampton Wanderers were so determined to hang onto their top scorer in 2013/14 that they rejected a number of offers from Celtic before eventually succumbing to a £1 million bid, the Express and Star reports.
Money is little object at Molineux these days however, following the arrival of new Chinese owners, and the club will surely go into the summer window with a goalscorer at the top of their list of priorities.
No Wolves striker has scored more than three this season and, if Helder Costa departs, the situation will become even more desperate. They need a striker who guarantees goals and Griffiths is exactly that.
