Wimbledon manager Wally Downes has paid tribute to Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady, after the veteran scored the winner in Saturday’s tight encounter at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats were far from their best on Saturday and failed to register a single shot on target in the first half despite the impressive debut performances of January signings Lewis Morgan and Grant Leadbitter.

But McGeady came to their rescue with about 25 minutes to go, whipping a pinpoint strike into the top corner from the edge of the box. Sunderland moved up to fourth in the table as a result, three points off the automatic promotion positions with two games in hand.

And, speaking to Wimbledon’s official website, Downes admitted that McGeady was the difference between one point and three for Sunderland.

“Sunderland have got the financial clout to get in top players. Aiden McGeady may be a bit older than when he was playing in the Scottish Premiership, but there are bits of magic in players like him and he punished us today,” said Downes, who’s side stunned West Ham United in the FA Cup fourth round recently.

“If Sunderland win their games in hand they are a top-of-the-table side. I think we were more than a match for them.”

McGeady may be 32 years of age these days but he is arguably the most naturally gifted player in League One. The former Celtic hero has scored eight goals and set up another six this season and was named Sunderland’s Player of the Month in November.
