Rotherham United youngster Will Vaulks will be on the move this summer – but to Wolves or Rangers?

As far back as January 2016, Rangers were tracking the progress of a young Falkirk defender by the name of Will Vaulks. According to the Daily Mail, the Ibrox giants were plotting a move for the 22-year-old amid interest from Celtic and Sporting Lisbon after he piqued their interest with a late winner in a Scottish Championship clash last season.

Although 2017 has been far less enjoyable for the versatile Vaulks, it appears that Rangers could still be interested. The Daily Mail claims that manager Pedro Caixinha is planning a summer overhaul after Saturday’s humiliating 5-1 home defeat to Celtic.

And a £400,000 move for Vaulks, who is expected to leave current club Rotherham United after plummeting into League One, could be the club’s first port of call.

Yet, despite a difficult debut season in English football with The Millers, Rangers will once again face competition for Vaulks’ signature. The Daily Mail adds that Wolves are interested in a player who has actually emerged from the campaign with his reputation enhanced despite Rotherham finishing bottom of the Championship with just 22 points to their name.

And though a return to Scotland may be tempting, Wolves may find that Vaulks is the ideal player to add an element of solidity to a backline that has been too easily breached this season.

The now 23-year-old has spent the majority of the season in defensive midfield and, while his passing needs some work, his tenacity in the tackle and strength in the air means he could be the physical presence Paul Lambert’s side are crying out for.

Furthermore, Vaulks has even filled in on the right side of defence this season, meaning his arrival could allow makeshift full-back Connor Coady (below) to return to his natural midfield position.

And, at just £400,000, Vaulks could be available on a bargain fee – a factor which should appeal to a club who have wasted far too much money of late.
