League One challengers Sunderland have reportedly looked at signing the prolific Exeter City striker Jayden Stockley.

Jayden Stockley has certainly picked up where he left of last season.

The prolific Exeter City forward netted 19 times in 41 League Two games in 2017/18 and is well on track to beat that tally this time around too. Stockley has scored nine times in 13 games already with his purple patch stretching into a new campaign.

No wonder he caught Sunderland’s eye. According to Sky Sports, Stockley was on the Black Cats’ radar before Jack Ross succeeded in bringing Charlie Wyke to the North East from Bradford City.

Though with Stockley’s outstanding form continuing, Sunderland could do worse than to have a look again in January, especially with the young Josh Maja out of contract next summer and Wyke struggling with a serious knee injury.

Not that Exeter want to sell.

“Whenever there is speculation about any player, it is a problem,” Grecians chairman Julian Tagg told Devon Live.

“It would be very nice to one day move our club into a position where that was a lot easier and we are able to keep our best players for longer.”

What Tagg says next, however, perhaps explains why Stockley is likely to be a man in demand when the transfer window opens again.

“He is a top class guy and he is a top class athlete, as his goals and performances prove. He’s a top class guy all round.”

Stockley has scored 22 goals in 2018 alone, making him the most prolific player anywhere in England’s professional leagues right now. Even Harry Kane, Mo Salah and Sergio Aguero cannot match his scoring prowess right now.
