After one season in the Championship, Nottingham Forest sent Thomas Lam back to the Eredivisie with FC Twente.
Thomas Lam would have been hoping that a loan move away from Nottingham Forest would help him recover from that disappointing debut season at the City Ground in 2016/17.
The versatile Finland international only arrived at Forest from Eredivisie outfit FC Zwolle less than two years ago and could not have enjoyed a better start to life in England, scoring a rasping long-range drive on debut against Burton Albion.
But once Philippe Montanier was replaced by Mark Warburton, it was Lam to the slaughter. The centre-back, who can also play in defensive midfield, featured only three times in the final few months of the season under the former Rangers and Brentford manager.
So it was no real surprise when Lam left after just one year, returning to Holland on loan with FC Twente. But it’s fair to say things did not exactly go to plan.
Despite boasting a squad chock full of Eredivisie experience, including Adam Maher, Luciano Slagveer and former Liverpool winger Ousamma Assaidi, the 2011 league champions have now been relegated.
Their inevitable fate was sealed by a 5-0 thrashing by Vitesse Arnham on Sunday – and Lam was not even included in the matchday squad.
So it’s fair to say the 24-year-old has not exactly enhanced his reputation away from Nottingham Forest and the chances of him being included in Aitor Karanka’s first-team plans next season look very unlikely.
