Nicolai Jorgensen inspired Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title and, along with Leicester City’s Islam Slimani, is wanted by Premier League giants Newcastle United.
Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley appears ready to finally back his manager in the transfer market. Rafa Benitez has been on the lookout for a new centre-forward since the summer and now, with one week to go in the winter window, Ashley has apparently given the green light for a big-money deal to go through.
As reported by the Northern Echo, Newcastle are keen on Leicester City’s Islam Slimani. And with The Foxes demanding £20 million for the Algerian international, The Magpies will have to smash a transfer record that has been in place since Michael Owen arrived from Real Madrid all the way back in 2005.
Though Slimani is not the only targetman on Newcastle’s radar. According to Sky Sports, Ashley is also willing to make Feyenoord’s Danish striker Nicolai Jorgensen the most expensive player in Newcastle’s history.
Although it seems that they will have to almost double their initial bid in order to tempt the reigning Eredivisie champions into a sale.
So expect plenty of haggling to take place between now and next week as Newcastle aim to get the best value for their new first-choice centre-forward.
While Slimani struggled last season at Leicester, the same cannot be said about Jorgensen. The former Copenhagen striker enjoyed a dream debut season in Holland, scoring a Golden Boot-winning 21 goals and setting up another 11 to inspire Feyenoord to their first league title since 1999.
Jorgensen has a further seven in 13 league starts this time round.
