One of the priorities for West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini must be to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

Joe Hart has gone, returning to Manchester City after a deeply underwhelming loan spell, and Adrian has committed too many errors this season to suggest he is West Ham’s best possible option between the sticks.

So what are the chances of Pellegrini turning to a man he has worked with at two different clubs, across a stretch of four years?

“First of all Willy is a very good goalkeeper,” Pellegrini said after Willy Caballero saved three spot-kicks to seal a 2016 League Cup final triumph against Liverpool.

“Willy didn’t have a save to make in the 90 minutes, he made a very good save in extra time, and if we were going to do it this way then it was perfect that Willy was the hero.”

Caballero did not have too many moments under Pellegrini at City with Hart, for the most part, established as the club’s number one, but clearly the Argentine is a man West Ham’s new manager has a great deal of respect for.

‘The Engineer’ didn’t wait around to reunite with Caballero at the Etihad Stadium in 2014, the goalkeeper having shone for Pellegrini at Malaga between 2010 and 2012. During that time, Malaga finished fourth in La Liga and reached the quarter finals of the Champions League.

And with the 36-year-old Caballero quite clearly the back-up option at his current club Chelsea, the chance to work with Pellegrini again could appeal. This would be a move that could suit each and every party down to the ground.
