Leeds could miss out on one of their most exciting transfer targets – to none other than bitter rivals Manchester United.

As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds had enquired about signing 19-year-old striker George Hirst with his contract at Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday due to expire in the summer.

Hirst is one of the most promising young forwards in English football having scored goals for fun at youth level for both club and country. The England U20 international netted over 40 in all competitions last season and was named in the Team of the Competition as the Young Lions won the prestigious Toulon tournament last year.

But Leeds’ refusal to meet Sheffield Wednesday’s valuation of Hirst in 2017, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, could now come back to bite them.

It is understood that Manchester United have now sped to the front of the queue to sign the teenager.

And Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has admitted that Hirst, who has not played first-team football all season due to a refusal to sign a new deal at Hillsborough, may struggle to reject the chance to move to Old Trafford, as reported by Sky Sports.

And if Hirst does fulfil that huge potential in the famous red of Manchester United, Leeds fans will be wondering why their club did not just pay what Sheffield Wednesday wanted when they had the chance.
