Gary Rowett was interested in linking up with his former Birmingham City winger David Cotterill at Derby County in the summer.

Even when the Welsh winger was being targeting by the boo boys at Birmingham City, Rowett continued to put his faith in the enigmatic Cotterill.
“He has come good, fantastically good,” Rowett told the Birmingham Mail in May last year, after Cotterill earned a place in Wales pre-Euro 2016 training camp. “I think he has been absolutely terrific.”
It’s telling that Cotterill’s best form in a Birmingham shirt came during Rowett’s spell in charge at St Andrews. And it’s interesting to note that he hasn’t been the same player since the highly-rated manager was stupidly sacked 12 months ago.
Though with Birmingham’s official Twitter account confirming that Cotterill has been released from his contract with mutual consent, will Rowett be tempted to hand the 30-year-old a fresh start at current club Derby County?
According to Wales Online, Rowett was interested in bringing Cotterill to Pride Park in the summer though a deal did not materialise. And after the former Wigan Athletic man started just two Championship games all season, he could be forgiven for wishing he had been given the chance to link up with his former boss again.
Derby can call on the in-form Tom Lawrence and Andi Weimann in wide areas right now, but Cotterill could offer some quality in depth – which would not go amiss as The Rams aim to stay in the promotion picture for as long as it takes.
