Is Everton’s Callum Connolly becoming Wigan’s scapegoat as fans slam loanee?

Callum Connolly moved to Championship newcomers Wigan Athletic in the summer from Premier League outfit Everton.

There are two Everton youngsters currently honing their talents on loan at Wigan Athletic.

But while USA international left-back Antonee Robinson goes from strength to strength under Paul Cook, Callum Connolly appears to have hit the buffers.

The 21-year-old defender spent time at Wigan during the 2016/17 season and returned to the DW Stadium in the summer. But his second spell with The Latics has not exactly gone to plan so far.

Connolly has started just three Championship games out of eight under Cook and suddenly appears to have found himself on the wrong side of supporters, many of whom demanded that he be removed from the squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Preston North End.

Leave burn out today…let him get fitter. Connolly has had some form issues recently so maybe he would be the one to drop out but sure cook will work out the best men to choose for the opponents coming. Only 3 months to toy with then Evans can be made permanent.

Wasn’t keen 1st time, and now know it’s because he’s better at CDM, but he isn’t getting over Gibson Evans or Morsey. Can’t afford drop Robinson (no lb) or James (best rb in league) nor Walton.

The critics got their wish. Connolly was omitted from the 18 that travelled to Deepdale with Cook’s side going down 4-0 away to Alex Neil’s struggling side.

In Connolly’s defence, however, he has been forced to play an unfamiliar right-wing role in recent weeks despite starring in the centre of midfield during a spell at Ipswich Town last season.

Is this simply a case of Wigan misusing the Everton loanee? Either way, it seems that the youngster is starting to become something of a scapegoat at the DW Stadium.
