Despite scoring four goals in two Premier League seasons, it seems that Christian Benteke is set to get a new contract at Selhurst Park.
Christian Benteke surely can’t believe his luck.
Despite scoring just four goals in his last 50 Premier League games spanning two miserable seasons at Selhurst Park, the blundering Belgian is set to be rewarded with an extension to his already eye-watering £120,000-a-week contract.
“I believe negotiations are taking place,” manager Roy Hodgson told the Evening Standard.
“If Christian signs a new contract I will be happy for him and I shall be happy to continue working with him.”
While Hodgson is ‘happy’, the Crystal Palace fans who have watched on in horror as Benteke lumbers around the pitch, a shadow of the irrepressible battering ram who scored goals for fun at Aston Villa, don’t exactly share the coach’s enthusiasm.
After another summer in which Palace spent peanuts on new signings, supporters are understandably nonplussed about why the club are so keen to keep an expensive white elephant on their books.
But with the Eagles seemingly moving to avoid losing Benteke on a free in 12 months, the ball is now in his court. He needs to prove that he is worth his £120,000-a-week – otherwise the critics will become even more vocal.
